'Ted Lasso' Season 2, Episode 11 Recap: Who Said This Show Had No Drama?

(Apple TV+)

You people (me) complained about Ted Lasso not having enough drama. I imagine the entire time that dialogue was going on, the writers were sitting in their rooms snickering, thinking about the last three episodes of the season. Last week was only an appetizer for the absolute feast that occurred this week, and we’ve got a lot to unpack.

First things first, Richmond’s season is winding down. It appears that they’ve been on a hot streak lately - not that we would know, because this show isn’t even about soccer anymore - and Sam has just come off of a hat trick that pulled the squad to victory. (I’m not trying to be nitpicky, but it seems like Jaime and Dani have been all but forgotten this season. Where is Jaime’s redemption arc? Why doesn’t Dani get the screen time he deserves?) Their next game is the last one of the season, and - to nobody’s surprise - if they win, they will escape relegation. Higgins comes into Rebecca’s office to announce that Edwin Okufu, a billionaire philanthropist from Ghana, wants to visit the Greyhounds. The squad is under the impression that he will want to buy the team.

We get a GREAT cameo from Sam Richardson as Okufu. Richardson is a gem who flits in and out of comedy projects, but to me is most recognizable for the brilliant work he did on HBO’s Veep. What a treat to see his face all the way over here on Apple TV+! To everyone’s surprise, he announces that he doesn’t want to buy the team, but instead is looking to acquire Sam, as he looks to build his own squad back in Africa. Becca, as you can imagine, is distraught. Seeing as she’s the one who refuses to commit to Sam, this seems a bit selfish to me! But alas, she agrees to let Okufu talk to him. He essentially wines and dines Sam before making his offer, which Sam understandably has to consider for a while (AKA, until next week). At the end of the episode, Becca shows up on his front porch and asks him to stay. She proceeds to disappear dramatically into the night, leaving poor Sam morally conflicted, I assume.

Quick aside - while Sassy’s daughter Nora relentlessly gasses Becca up as a girl boss, that is not quite the vibe I am getting from her this season, at least not anymore. She is so utterly consumed by her desire for affection that it seems the rest of her personality has taken a back seat, which is exactly the opposite of what a girl boss would do. Leave Sam alone, Becca! You are old enough to be his mother!

It is Dr. Sharon’s last week, and Ted has choreographed a team dance as a final goodbye to her. However, he is displeased to discover that, due to an “emergency”, Dr. Sharon Irish-goodbye’d Richmond, leaving nothing but a letter for every individual. Ted storms over to her house to yell at her for abandoning him, like his wife and his father (ugh). She begs Ted to read the letter she wrote him, and after a bit of a fight, he does, and he cries. Then they go out for drinks together. Eventually, they go their separate ways, and Ted is on his own again.

But that’s not all! In the meantime, it seems that Roy and Keeley’s relationship is hanging on by a string. I don’t know when it all started to go to shit, but I have a pit in my stomach. Because this is Ted Lasso, I hold out hope that they will have a happy ending next week. This week, however, Keeley has her first magazine feature (for being a girlboss), and Roy is participating in her photoshoot. Before that, he heads to pick up Phoebe from school, only to find that there had been a half day. Instead of leaving, he stays to hang out with her teacher for what we later find out is four whole hours - not once mentioning that he has a serious girlfriend (sigh… men).

While Roy is out, Keeley is taking Nate to buy a new suit. It has become increasingly hard to root for Nate in any capacity, and this week is no exception. I have this feeling that Beard knows exactly what Nate is up to at all times, but is trying not to get involved. I think this is a bad choice. We still have no idea what Rupert said to him last week at the funeral, but it can’t possibly be good.

Here’s where things get ugly: Keeley is the only person who is constantly nice to Nate. Therefore, as a man, it is only right that he gets confused, mistaking Keeley for someone who is flirting with him, or something. I don’t know what goes on in the brain of a man (thank God). Anyways, Nate tries (successfully) to kiss Keeley while she is helping him to fix his tie. In other words, Nate kisses her right on the face. Full contact. Keeley backs away, and Nate goes back into the fitting room and spits at himself in the mirror. The kid needs help. It is worth mentioning that he spends the entire episode asking everyone in his vicinity, “don’t you ever want to be the boss”? He is clearly in pursuit of Ted’s job, and no matter how utterly delusional this may be, it still makes Nate dangerous. That’s right, I said it! The kid is unhinged!

Back to Reeley (or Koy). The photoshoot is going well until the couple is asked to lock eyes for an intimate shot, and something compels them to start telling secrets. Keeley tells Roy that Nate tried to kiss her. Roy, in turn, tells Keeley that he spent four hours with Phoebe’s teacher. Keeley tells Roy that Jaime confessed he was still in love with her at the funeral last week. All of a sudden, everyone is crying. For some reason, the photographer doesn’t stop the shoot. The vibe change was tangible in that moment. She is not good at her job.

The episode ends with Ted getting a text from Trent Crimm, who tells him he will be running an article tomorrow that exposes Ted for having a panic attack rather than food poisoning when he ran out of the Richmond game a few weeks ago. The article is based on information from an “anonymous source”, but out of respect, Trent reveals to Ted that his source was none other than Nate. Ted, now without the comfort of Dr. Sharon, is left alone to deal with this betrayal. I find myself filled with a boiling rage! Who does Nate think he is?

I sense next week’s season finale will be a nail-biter!

Episode rating: 4.5/5

A question I have: did Ted and Sassy kiss last week? Wtf?
