'Succession' S3 Episode 2 Recap — Do the Right Thing

Kendall attempts to sway his siblings to his side.
(HBO)

While it has been a week for audiences waiting to see what the Roys would be up to next, the family seems to be perpetually stuck in the longest day in the world. Rava does not get enough credit for putting up with Kendall — imagine living with someone who talks about history like that. I don’t like talking smack about our favorite boy, but he was being a real meanie this week. As always, we see that no matter how hard he tries to escape his dad’s orbit, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Being mean to Connor, Roman, and Shiv was bad, but I draw the line at yelling at Jess. I thought seeing his boyfriend again would have kept him in a good mood, but alas. It was great to have Stewy back in his little bad boy outfit though. Lord knows we needed more fancam content from him.

Speaking of boyfriends, Greg is still struggling to grasp the situation at hand and playing musical chairs with lawyers to stay out of jail. I’m incredibly interested to know the story behind his first-semester law student friend and what evil spell he must have cast to make her want to hang out with him. In the end, it seems he will unwittingly fall into the right hands once again. I don’t think Ewan and Tom are going to be particularly fond of each other though, so I hope the TomGregs are counting their prayers.

Meanwhile, Logan is pushing his sad hotel salad around with his fork (relatable), and once again I’m struck with a sick feeling of sympathy for him. It was very sweet of him to call Roman and bestow his trust in him. If only he didn’t offer Shiv a position as president to serve as his spy on the inside in the end. Very glad to see Marcia back and exerting her power as she should. Who knew she had a daughter too? Logan (down bad) is willing to do anything to have her on his side again and she should accept nothing else.

The siblings are having a similar issue. Too bad the only person Kendall is down bad for is himself (sometimes his dad but not anymore). An alliance would actually be amazing to witness. Of course, Logan’s ability to make his children fear him wins again. He has been able to instill a fantasy of himself in their minds that convinces them he is indestructible. Even after hours of conversation and coming to the logical conclusion that he isn’t as strong as he used to be 20 years ago, he still seems safer to run back to. Ironic that Shiv was telling Roman he couldn’t “hide under the covers with Mommy." As if she had the guts to take Kendall’s side anyway. I mean, Roman does stick with “Mommy", taking Gerri’s advice to stay under her wing, but Shiv didn’t have to be so mean about it!

It feels almost sacrilegious to actually critique an episode of this show. The premiere left me with no complaints whatsoever but if I am honest episode two was not my favorite. I want the hypothetical conversations and mind games to end. In a way, I see how the pacing and structure of this episode helped it. I too felt trapped in Sophie's room begging my siblings for their support and forgiveness. Rava’s apartment is beautiful, too, but I would like to look at something else, please. It felt cruel that we cut away from Kendall the moment after his brothers and sister left. There was so much being packed into one episode that we didn’t have time to really reflect on the emotions being felt. It was an hour of setup and I’m eager to see what it all results in during the next episode. The free doughnuts were great, though, so thanks HBO!
