Sony, Disney strike a deal, Spider-Man will remain in the Marvel cinematic universe

In a shocking turn of events, Sony and Disney have come back to the table to strike a deal keep Tom Holland in the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) as your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.

Along with the announcement of the new deal, a third MCU Spider-Man movie has been announced with a release date of July 16, 2021. Spidey is also scheduled to appear in another upcoming MCU movie.

According to Variety, the deal was agreed upon late Thursday night by execs on both sides. Marvel will be receiving 25% of profits on the next Spider-Man film, a decrease in the alleged 50% Marvel originally asked for (There were conflicting reports on the legitimacy of the offers sent back and forth between Disney and Sony).

Marvel's head honcho, Kevin Fiege will receive a producer credit. Fiege who is responsible for assembling this massive interconnected cinematic universe has stat before his love for the character of Peter Parker and Spider-Man. By being able to secure the first Sony/Disney deal, Fiege was able to integrate the web-slinger into Captain America: Civil War which reinvigorated after a failed reboot attempt with The Amazing Spider-Man.

The franchise was brought back to life with the MCU's first solo Spidey movie, Spider-Man: Homecoming, as well as Spider-Man's appearances in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers Endgame. The momentum carried into this summer with the release of Spider-Man: Far From Home, grossing over 1 billion dollars at the box office and becoming the highest-grossing Spider-Man film ever.

All in all, some great news coming out of a situation where it seemed like there would be no resolution. Fans all over should be happy, but there's one person who looks more happy than anyone else.
