Take: Lil Uzi Vert vs. The World is Uzi’s best project.
Honestly, I’m not sure if that’s a hot take. From Twitter, it seems like many people agree that life was untouchable when this mixtape came out- summer 2016. Lil Uzi Vert vs. The World is most definitely a fan favorite. Personally, Lil Uzi was probably about 60% of my high school soundtrack, this project especially. This project brings back memories of some of the most fun times of my life thus far, so I’m slightly biased.
Regardless of the nostalgia, it’s hard to choose the best Uzi project. Every single Uzi project is solid - both Luv is Rage installments are classics, The Perfect LUV Tape is filled to the brim with hits. However, Lil Uzi Vert vs. The World is arguably Uzi’s most important project. Lil Uzi Vert vs. The World confidently established Uzi’s sound & style and made him a star in no time.
To me, Lil Uzi Vert vs. The World is a perfect length- 9 songs, 34 minutes. There isn’t a single bad song on here; every single track is memorable 3 years later. Lil Uzi Vert vs. The World is a certified no-skip.
With that being said, I’m going to challenge myself to pick the Top 5 Songs from Lil Uzi Vert vs. The World. Here goes:
#5: “Scott and Ramona” (prod. WondaGurl)
In this gem, Uzi pays homage to Scott Pilgrim - the inspiration behind the title and theme of Lil Uzi Vert vs. The World, after the movie “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World”.
Uzi likens himself and former? love interest, Brittany, to the couple of Scott and Ramona from the film. Uzi’s love for Brittany is one of the most common topics in his earlier music; “Scott and Ramona” is arguably one of the realest songs he ever made about their relationship.
“I can’t go a day if I don’t talk to my babyyy” - i felt that shit
The icy production from WondaGurl makes this track a smooth and reflective listen. It’s not even a sad song, but it always mildly gets me in my feelings. You can very well feel the emotion of the track.
“Scott and Ramona” was a flawless outro track for a flawless Uzi project.
#4: Hi Roller (prod. Maaly Raw)
In my opinion, this is one of Uzi’s catchiest tracks to date.
“YOU KNO IMA HIIII ROLLAAAAAA”
Uzi and Maaly are a dream team duo. “Hi Roller” is just one of the tracks that best showcases their chemistry. Maaly can provide beats unorthodox enough for Uzi’s style.
Uzi provided a perfect mix of melody and bars on this track, first proving himself as the versatile artist we now know him to be.
#3: “You Was Right” (prod. Metro Boomin)
This song was something special. The first time I heard it, it felt like the world stopped.
Uzi and Metro were both entering their primes at the time they made this gem. I don’t know if “prime” is the best word to use, but they were both really beginning to dominate the game. Either way, this collab shocked the world. “You Was Right” was not their first collab, but it was arguably the first one to snap off. This shit went viral.
I can’t dance for shit, but this song makes me wanna hit that shit every single time. “You Was Right” is the epitome of a carefree, summer-friendly banger.
#2: “Grab the Wheel” (prod. CuBeatz & Don Cannon)
This song is iconic. Uzi delivers storytelling and funny bars in smooth and catchy fashion, making for one of his best songs.
“I MIGHT GET A LAKEHOUSE WITH A BOAT”
The production from CuBeatz and Don Cannon is incredible, making this song an instant classic. It’s ironic considering how the Don Cannon and Uzi relationship panned out, but they undoubtedly made some hits together.
#1. “Team Rocket” (prod. Lyle Leduff & Don Cannon)
This track is another display of Uzi and Don Cannon’s hit-making chemistry at the time. Lyle Leduff and Don Cannon made this one of the smoothest, yet hardest beats Uzi ever used - establishing a new sound all together.
Uzi had one of his best performances ever on this track, essentially just venting and talking about his life while rapping his ass off. He was very casual and honest while still mixing in typical flair and subtle brags. The hooks on this track are incredibly catchy, not to mention.
I feel like putting this track at my #1 is a bit of a hot take. Honestly, I can’t really describe it; I just love this song. I feel like it’s one of the most important songs from this mixtape and one of the most important songs from Uzi’s whole discography.
