Last Week in Music: 4/27-5/1

Last week brought us gems from Drake, Lil Baby, YG, Doja Cat, G-Eazy, Kota the Friend, Kehlani, Machine Gun Kelly, and more.

We compiled our five favorite releases and added your takes, too. Keep up with the Burbs Instagram to vote each week. While you're at it, cop yourself a cozy Burbs hoodie.

Let's talk some music:

#5 - “Laugh Now Kry Later!” by YG

YG finally dropped after a year without solo music, following up last year’s 4REAL 4REAL

“Laugh Now Kry Later!” is produced by Iceberg, FranchiseDidIt, and Pasque. The single is meant to embrace living life in the moment and not dwelling on the negatives, illustrated through its title. Gotta appreciate the consistent use of “K” instead of “C” in typical YG bashion.

#4 - “Say So” (ft. Nicki Minaj) by Doja Cat

After dropping Hot Pink in November of last year, the original version of “Say So” erupted into a Top 5 hit thanks to TikTok. To keep applying the pressure, Doja Cat enlisted Nicki Minaj to lay down a solid verse on the new remix.

This verse sees Nicki at her sharpest, dropping bars like, “Ball like the Rams, see, now that's Gordon”. Her verse perfectly meshes with Doja’s catchy chorus and second verse.

I wasn’t too sure how I would like this one, but it personally exceeded my expectations. If you’re also not a big fan of radio chart-toppers, I think you might be impressed by this one, too.

#3 - My Turn (Deluxe) by Lil Baby

After making a splash with My Turn this past February, Lil Baby tacked on six bonus tracks for the album’s deluxe edition.

The first of the six tracks is the timely-titled “Social Distancing,” followed by “All In,” “Low Down,” “Humble,” “Get Money,” and “We Paid” with associate 42 Dugg.

With production from usual suspects Quay Global and Section 8, these six bonus tracks help make My Turn an even bolder statement.

#2 - “B.Q.E” (ft. Joey Bada$$ & Bas) by Kota the Friend

As the first single off his upcoming sophomore album EVERYTHING, Kota the Friend brought in fellow New Yorkers Joey Bada$$ and Bas for this wavy joint.

“B.Q.E” stands for the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, embracing the artists’ roots. The track was previewed by Kota a month before its release and was also produced by Kota, showcasing the range of the budding artist from the Big Apple.

#1Dark Lane Demo Tapes by Drake

Nearly two years removed from Scorpion, Drake dropped off a smooth catalog of surprise gems, leaks, and Soundcloud/YouTube-exclusive tracks that he amassed during his “hiatus”.

The 14-track mixtape features a handful of singles that Drake has dropped since last fall: “War,” “Chicago Freestyle,” “What To Say When,” “Desires,” and “Toosie Slide”. However, leaks were just as present on Dark Lane Demo Tapes with “Landed,” “Demons,” “Deep Pockets,” and the already-infamous “Pain 1993” featuring Playboi Carti’s most polarizing verse to-date.

Aside from Carti, Drake tapped underground talent in Giveon, Fivio Foreign, and Sosa Geek as well as all-stars in Future, Young Thug, and Chris Brown.

And, oh, yeah – Drake is dropping his sixth studio album on us this summer, which basically insinuates that DLDT is just a sample plate of the album leftovers. For a loosie tape, DLDT was a solid effort that arrived just in time.
