Last Week in Music: 3/30-4/3

Last week in music kicked April off with releases from Frank Ocean, Drake, Thundercat, Turbo, Young Thug & Gunna, Rod Wave, DaBaby, Tory Lanez, Yung Pinch, Steve Aoki, and more.

#5 - “QUARANTINE CLEAN” by Turbo, Young Thug, and Gunna

Fan-favorite producer Turbo recruited fellow Atlantans Thugger and Gunna for a timely ode to self-quarantine.

This COVID-19 anthem marks the 30th collaboration between the King Slime and his YSL prodigy. Both trap stars blessed the track, but Thug gave us a gem of a quotable:

“I’m quarantine-clean, but got a slime disease”

“QUARANTINE CLEAN” is a fun and light-hearted record to help us through these bizarre times.

#4 - “Toosie Slide” by Drake

Drake has returned to the limelight with a catchy new hit to accompany the TikTok dance of the same name.

The wavy beat from OZ allowed Drake to float and flex, frequently comparing himself to Michael Jackson while boasting the newest additions to his wardrobe. The music video for “Toosie Slide” is the biggest flex of all, subtly showcasing coveted KAWS dolls, original Andy Warhol art, and remote control fireworks, among many other high-ticket items scattered across his massive compound.

While mildly corny, this track and its rollout were a genius business move on Drake’s end. With the booming potential of TikTok, this track could become one of Drake’s most viral songs to-date.

#3 - It Is What It Is by Thundercat

Experimental icon Thundercat finally followed up his 2017 classic Drunk with a brand new masterpiece.

This wavy joint features artists Childish Gambino, Steve Lacy, Zack Fox, Lil B, Ty Dolla $ign, Louis Cole, and Pedro Martins. Production was handled by Thundercat himself in addition to Flying Lotus, BADBADNOTGOOD, Sounwave, Dennis Hamm, and Kamasi Washington.

Thundercat describes It Is What It Is as an "album is about love, loss, life and the ups and downs that come with that."

#2 - “Cayendo” by Frank Ocean

One of two new Frank singles, “Cayendo” is a half-English, half-Spanish record that highlights the talent and versatility of R&B’s most enigmatic star.

Alongside "Dear April," both tracks were first premiered back in October of last year at a nightclub. Both tracks were also released on vinyl October 19, but just now made their way to streaming services.

According to Genius, "Cayendo" describes 'the sensation of falling he feels for his significant other who seemingly does not reciprocate the same feelings.' This track as well as "Dear April" were produced by Daniel Aged and Frank himself.

#1 - “Dear April” by Frank Ocean
