Last Week In Music: 1/27-1/31

Welcome back! Last week delivered a strong lineup of star-studded releases, with studio albums from artists such as Lil Wayne, Yo Gotti, Key Glock, Rob $tone, and Gorillaz. Singles also popped up from artists such as Future and Drake, Justin Bieber, Tory Lanez, and A Boogie wit da Hoodie.

#5 - Untrapped by Yo Gotti

Yo Gotti has returned with Untrapped, his first studio album since 2017.

The Memphis trap icon gave us a handful of hard, yet forgettable slappers - with standout tracks featuring Rick Ross, Lil Uzi Vert, Megan Thee Stallion, and Estelle. Untrapped certainly displays range, more so than past Yo Gotti projects, but still falls short and feels uninspired at points. However, if you're just looking for some music to have a good time to, this album will do the trick.

#4 - Yellow Tape by Key Glock

South Memphis standout Key Glock has returned with his first solo project since 2018's Glockoma. He and close collaborator Young Dolph gave us Dum & Dummer last year, butYellow Tape sees Key Glock attempt to separate and establish himself as one of the most exciting trap talents emerging from the South.

Tracks such as "Stop Playin", "Word on the Streets", "1997", "What Goes Around Comes Around", and the Kenny Beats-produced "Loaded" are the project's standouts. With no features, Yellow Tape is Key Glock's boldest display to date.

#3 - Funeral by Lil Wayne

His first full-length release since capping off Tha Carter saga in 2018, Funeral is an excessively long album with about as many hits as misses.

Don’t get me wrong, though - the hits are solid. Tracks such as "Bastard" (Satan's Kid), "Harden", and "I Don't Sleep" (ft. Takeoff) boast flashes of Weezy’s impeccable wordplay and notorious, at-your-neck flow. "Sights and Silencers" (ft. The-Dream) is a beautifully smooth display of singing from both artists, alongside genre-bending cuts such as "Dreams" and "Trust Nobody" (ft. Adam Levine).

The "misses" aren't necessarily bad songs - just unnecessary. At 24 tracks, Funeral would have been much better cut in half (if not more). Nonetheless, Funeral was a solid return for Weezy F Baby.

#2 - Stone Cold by Rob $tone

Best known for his hit “Chill Bill”, San Diego artist Rob $tone has returned with a smooth new album - Stone Cold.

Stone Cold is a well-rounded project with a track for any possible occasion. If you're looking for upbeat bangers, you got tracks like "Big Body" and "Too Faded" (ft. P.L.O). If you're looking for wavy, laidback cuts, you got tracks like "Can't Sleep" and "In The Street Alone". Stone Cold has a solid mix of both party-pleasers and deep cuts; I can promise it will add some depth to your aux rotation.

If you're not familiar with Rob $tone, Stone Cold is a perfect introduction.

#1 - “Desires” by Future and Drake

Trap’s favorite power duo has returned with another surprise single - “Desires”.

Likely foreshadowing What a Time to Be Alive 2 alongside the recent “Life is Good”, this wavy track sees the two stars shine with ease. Drake delivers an infectious hook and emotional verse, complemented by Future's melodic crooning detailing the pros and cons of life in the fast lane. Albeit a bit generic, "Desires" is a lovely taste of the chemistry that these two possess on a track together.

Future and Drake: please bless us with What a Time 2. The streets need it.
