According to multiple reports, Lakers center DeMarcus Cousins has suffered a torn ACL.
The four-time All-Star signed a one-year deal with Los Angeles after spending one season with the Golden State Warriors. After tearing his Achilles while playing for the New Orleans Pelicans in 2018, Cousins spent most of last year rehabbing from the injury before appearing in 30 games and posting averages of 16.3 points, 8.2 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 1.5 blocks, and 1.3 steals on 48% shooting in 25 minutes per game.
He made his playoff debut with the Warriors before sustaining a torn left quad in Game 2 of the first round against the Los Angeles Clippers. He would go on to return in the NBA Finals against the eventual champion Toronto Raptors.
Cousins was expected to join a Lakers team featuring LeBron James, Anthony Davis, Kyle Kuzma, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, and Rajon Rondo on a quest to return to the Finals. With AD and Cousins teaming up with LeBron in Hollywood, they quickly become the favorites alongside the neighboring Clippers to take home the Larry O’Brien Trophy in June.
Tests still need to be conducted to confirm a tear, but the injury leaves a couple of question marks. How severe is the injury? Will Boogie be able to come back come playoff time and make an impact of the bench? Are the Lakers still going to be a favorite, or will this hit to their front court depth leave them scrambling come playoff time? Maybe a reunion with one-time Laker Dwight Howard is in order. The upcoming season has a lot of uncertainty and none of it will be cleared up until opening night.
Get well soon, Boogie. We’re all rooting for you over here at Burbs.
