Dear Diary,
Justin started today. And no, it wasn’t like last week at all. It was pure and brilliant.
There were times where I literally could not believe what was unfolding before my eyes.
You see, I’m not accustomed to my team’s quarterbacks making professional-level throws often. And he just made it look so easy. His play was speaking to me like, “What? Nobody else has ever done this for you before?” as if he were a new lover that opened my world to French-kissing. I’d never kissed with tongue before him. It was all just super sloppy lips. A whole lot of face-pressing, if you will. Justin opened my mind and heart to a whole new world of possibilities today.
He was putting balls in places that were insulting to zone and man defenses alike. If it weren’t for a tipped pass, he’d have had a nearly flawless game for a rookie quarterback. He wasn’t complacent, but he maintained an efficiency that is necessary for this offense to move the ball. He capitalized off of play-action and demonstrated a command of the offense that I’ve never really seen before in Chicago. He picked up a first down with legs on 3rd-and-medium. He was slightly off-target on one throw, but Darnell Motherfucking Mooney made up for it. It was a play that made me say to myself, “Mooney wouldn’t have sold his body out like that for Trubisky or Dalton. He did that because of his confidence in and respect for Justin.”
I haven’t been this happy in a long, long time. I hit hardly any of my bets yesterday (1/5, but still continue to tune in to FILLING SLOTS on your podcast platform of choice), and I sincerely couldn’t give less of a shit. The Bears won. Fields looked phenomenal. Allen Robinson remains one of the best X-Receivers in the league. Darnell Mooney is a budding star. Nagy gave up the majority of the play calling to Bill Lazor. The defense looks solid despite a lackluster secondary. David Montgomery’s a force to be reckoned with (my prayers are with him and his knee, for he has been one of the few bright spots thus far), and lastly — Chicago is the most beautiful city in the world in early October. Bear Down.
Sincerely,
