We've hit the halfway point of the NFL season, which means that it's full-on tank mode for some teams. There are coaches who need to turn it around. Otherwise, they're going to get relieved of their duties. In my mind, there are five guys, potentially more, who are likely to get the boot from their organizations in the offseason. Five NFL Coaches on the Hot Seat
1. Adam Gase, New York Jets
Yeah, no surprise here. Adam Gase is the worst coach in the NFL and should never be anywhere near any head coaching jobs ever again. His claim to fame was his role as offensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos went Peyton Manning went ballistic. Other than that, his offenses have ranked in the bottom third of the league in both points per game and yards per game. He's also stunted the growth of former #3 overall pick Sam Darnold to the point where he's on the trading block. With the New York Jets likely to secure the #1 overall pick, AKA Trevor Lawrence, it seems like the Jets are going to be moving on from Gase.
2. Doug Marrone, Jacksonville Jaguars
I hate to put Doug Marrone on here because he's a football guy through and through. Unfortunately, he's overstayed his welcome with the Jags. 2017 was a magical year for the once-called "Sacksonville," as they carried the league's best defense and made it all the way to the AFC Championship game. They were even a premature whistle away from representing the AFC in the Super Bowl. Ever since that point, it's been a colossal collapse, as most of the players on that team are no longer with the Jags. Gardner Minshew has been fun, but he isn't the long term answer at quarterback. Jacksonville will likely go QB in round one and new QB likely means new coach, so this seems like Marrone's time w/ the Jaguars is all but finished.
3. Mike McCarthy, Dallas Cowboys
Mike McCarthy ain't it Cowboys fans. It's been an absolute disaster for Dallas this year. I will say that injuries definitely are playing a factor, as Dak Prescott, Tyron Smith, La'el Collins, Zach Martin and Leighton Vander Esch have all missed time. Even when they were healthy, the Cowboys still didn't play well. Even the Cowboys players don't think McCarthy knows what he's doing. Jerry Jones isn't getting any younger, which means that McCarthy and future head coaches will have a shorter leash. Just like Steve Wilks in Arizona, I think Mike McCarthy gets the boot after just one season.
4. Mike Zimmer, Minnesota Vikings
Mike Zimmer's been a great defensive coach for the Minnesota Vikings since he took over in 2014. This year is a different story. The Vikings are abysmal on the defensive side of the ball, ranking near the bottom of the league in a lot of statistical categories. The offense, especially quarterback Kirk Cousins, isn't doing too hot either. All of those factors point to a changing of the guard at the head coach position. However, Zimmer should be able to land on his feet quickly as he's one of the brightest defensive minds in the league. I could definitely see him picking up an open defensive coordinator spot, or maybe even an open head coaching position.
5. Matt Patricia, Detroit Lions
I can't believe I'm saying this, but Matt Patricia might be in the strongest position out of these other coaches. The Detroit Lions are starting to get hot, as they've won two straight contests, including a thriller against the Atlanta Falcons that saw T.J. Hockenson score the game-winning touchdown. In addition, they have a favorable schedule coming up, where they could be in a position to pick up more wins. That could single-handedly save Matt Patricia's job. The Patricia era in Detroit has been mediocre and has always been at the top of hot seat discussions. He's still near the top and could still probably get fired if shit hits the fan, but it's 2020. Detroit could make the playoffs and do damage, who knows.
