Best Streaming Service: Netflix
As we spent the majority of 2020 locked in our houses, streaming became everybody’s new best friend. Netflix, which has seen its place as the top streaming service challenged by the likes of Disney+, HBO Max, Prime Video, and Hulu, provided the best at-home content of anyone. Netflix seemingly releases 1,000 new original shows and films every week, in turn maintaining their never-ending catalog. Some are amazing, while others are disastrously terrible. But in terms of value for your money—Netflix remains king.
Tiger King was a sweeping cultural phenomenon, The Queen’s Gambit provided the best television series of 2020 (and best performance by Anya-Taylor Joy), and Bridgerton concluded the year as a social media darling. They continued to bolster their ridiculous reality lineup with Indian Matchmaking and Love Is Blind, adding a layer to the genre that only a streaming service with endless resources could produce.
Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods and David Fincher’s Mank were released with Academy Award aspirations, further proving that Netflix is unafraid to throw buckets of cash towards the best talent the industry has to offer.
As the future of movie theaters (and Hollywood as a whole) remains uncertain heading into 2021, Netflix continues to prove that they’ll take risks and acquire whatever properties they need to in order to keep you watching. What sets them apart from every other service is their pure variety of originals: stand-up comedy specials, Oscar-bait films, preposterous reality television, adult animation, true-crime docuseries, and much, much more. -Jack Martin
