Future and Lil Uzi Vert have a quality history with one another, so it only makes sense that the two would come together for a father-son project such as Pluto x Baby Pluto. It’s simply unfortunate that none of the songs on this 16-track project amount to even half of their biggest hit “Too Much Sauce.”
The expectations are astronomical when two A-list artists like Future and Uzi link up for a collaborative project. It’s seldom that two superstars exceed those high expectations. We‘ve seen it happen only a few times over the last decade: Watch the Throne, What a Time to Be Alive, and Super Slimey. The messiah of trap music, Future Hendrix, has been a part of two of those three projects, and he was elevated into a different stratosphere because of his efforts on them. Both of those projects—assisted by Drake and Young Thug, respectively—had concrete ideas that complimented each artist involved. Pluto x Baby Pluto has an outstanding idea and premise, but fails to execute where necessary in order to exist in the same aura as the aforementioned projects.
Coming to the realization that WATTBA was created in six days is mind-blowing, because it sounds like it took six months to craft the sheer intangible brilliance of it. There’s no telling how long Pluto x Baby Pluto has been stashed away, but it feels like they made this during a 72-hour adderall and codeine bender. It’s incoherent in a lot of areas, with too many downs and not enough ups. It pains me to say this as a Future stan, but the overall consistency just isn’t there. He shines so brightly on “Moment of Clarity” and “Rockstar Chainz,” but his delivery is exhausting on “F-Off Dat” and “Stripes Like Burberry.” This project belongs under the same umbrella as Future and Juice WRLD’s WRLD on Drugs, Key Glock and Young Dolph’s Dum & Dummer, or 21 Savage and Offset’s Without Warning.
It’s important to note that this project is in no way indicative of what either of these artists are capable of as individuals, but is more of an affirmation that not every duo is as flawless as they seem to be on the surface.
